Re-investigating the disappearance of Joseph Smedley — and beyond
“A Heavy Weight” began with the disappearance of Joseph Smedley, an ambitious 20-year-old sophomore at Indiana University. Bright, determined, and full of potential, Joseph was pursuing a degree in biochemistry and pre-pharmacology, with dreams of creating life-saving medications. He had recently joined the Sigma Pi fraternity and was determined to succeed despite the challenges life had thrown his way.
On the night of September 27, 2015, Joseph walked out of his off-campus home and vanished. Nearly five days later, his body was found in a local lake, weighed down by a backpack full of rocks. His case didn’t receive the attention it deserved, leaving his family and many others wondering what truly happened.
This podcast series was born out of a desire to bring renewed awareness to Joseph’s case, hoping to find the answers his family still seeks. But “A Heavy Weight” isn’t stopping there—future seasons will focus on other cases that deserve the same attention and investigation, continuing the mission to uncover the truth and bring closure to those left in the dark.

As the host of A Heavy Weight, I’m dedicated to uncovering overlooked and forgotten cases, giving space to stories that might otherwise go unnoticed. With a background in investigative storytelling, I approach each episode with meticulous research and care, striving to bring truth to light, advocate for justice, and honor the lives of those impacted. My goal isn’t just to inform and engage, but to examine whose stories we remember, why others are forgotten, and what this reveals about justice and collective memory.
