Bryan Haltom Episode 4: The Final Hours Before the Highway 231 Shooting

by | Aug 6, 2026 | News

On July 16, 1996, eighteen-year-old Bryan Haltom left home in Spencer, Indiana.

He told his mother he would be home by 11. He told her he loved her. Like she always did, Lynn told him she loved him more.

Bryan never came home.

Episode 4 of A Heavy Weight’s Bryan Haltom series follows the final known hours before Bryan was shot and killed on Highway 231 outside Spencer, Indiana in the early morning hours of July 17, 1996.

This episode moves carefully through the last-night timeline: where Bryan was seen, who he was reportedly with, when Trevor Powell got into Bryan’s red Trans Am, and how the road-rage account became the public story of the case.

The fair, Falk’s, and the final hours

Bryan’s last night began in ordinary places.

The Owen County Fair was in town. Teenagers were out. Cars moved through Spencer the way they often did in the 1990s, from one parking lot to another, from one familiar place to the next.

In the hours before his death, Bryan was reportedly seen around town, including at the fair. Later that night, Trevor Powell got into Bryan’s car at Falk’s Restaurant.

From there, the story becomes more complicated.

According to the account that shaped the investigation, Bryan and Trevor later encountered another vehicle. The early public version of the case described a traffic incident or road-rage confrontation involving a maroon or burgundy car, a stranger, and a driver who disappeared after the shooting.

The road-rage story

For nearly thirty years, Bryan’s case has often been described through that frame: road rage.

A maroon car.
A stranger.
A confrontation.
A shot fired in the dark.

But Episode 4 asks listeners to slow that story down.

What happened before the traffic incident? Where had Bryan and Trevor been? Who saw them? What did Trevor say happened? And why has the road-rage account never led to an arrest?

The goal of this episode is not to claim certainty. It is to return to the timeline with care and ask what the known pieces do and do not explain.

Episode 4 is a turning point in the Bryan Haltom series.

The first episodes introduce Bryan as a person: a son, a friend, a first love, and a teenager with a red Trans Am. Episode 3 looks at the months before his death, when some people close to him began to notice a shift.

It is the bridge between who Bryan was and the physical evidence that follows. It sets up the questions that become central in later episodes: the scene, Trevor’s account, the missing maroon car, the people Bryan may have been around, and the possibility that the night on Highway 231 did not begin on Highway 231.

If you were in or around Spencer, Indiana in July 1996, or if you remember anything about Bryan Haltom, the fair, Falk’s, Highway 231, the maroon car, or the people Bryan was with that night, your memory may still matter.

Nearly thirty years later, Bryan’s family is still waiting for answers.

Someone knows something.
