Bryan Haltom Episode 6: Trevor Powell, the Witness Account, and the Missing Maroon Car

by | Aug 20, 2026 | News

When Bryan Haltom was shot and killed on Highway 231 outside Spencer, Indiana in July 1996, he was not alone.

Trevor Powell was in Bryan’s red Trans Am that night. He was the passenger, the witness, and the person whose account gave police the first public version of the case.

That version became familiar: a maroon car, a traffic confrontation, a chase through Spencer, a stop on Highway 231, and one shot fired in the dark.

But nearly thirty years later, Bryan’s murder remains unsolved.

Episode 6 of A Heavy Weight, The Witness, examines Trevor Powell’s account and asks whether the road rage story was the whole truth, part of the truth, or a version that left too much out.

For Bryan’s family, the fact that there was a witness initially gave them hope.

Someone was there. Someone saw what happened. Someone could help police identify the person who killed Bryan.

But that hope did not last.

The information Trevor provided was not enough to immediately identify the shooter, and the case did not resolve. Over time, the witness account that first gave Bryan’s family hope became one of the case’s most painful questions.

Trevor maintained that he told the truth. But Bryan’s family and others around the case questioned whether his version explained enough.

According to the account that shaped the investigation, another car nearly struck Bryan’s vehicle near Main and Morgan in Spencer. Trevor said he and Bryan followed the car, tailgated it, and eventually ended up on Highway 231.

The other car was described as sporty and maroon or burgundy. The driver was described as a stranger.

Trevor said Bryan stopped his car, got out, and went back toward the other vehicle. Then, according to Trevor, the driver fired one shot.

Bryan was hit in the chest.

The driver disappeared.

That version became the public story.

But Episode 6 slows that story down.

If there was another car, who was driving it? Why was it never found? If Bryan and Trevor chased that car through Spencer, who else saw it? If the driver was a stranger, how did he disappear so completely? And if the driver was not a stranger, why did the story need him to be?

One of the most important questions in Episode 6 is also one of the hardest to ask:

Was there really another car?

Not because anyone can say for certain that there was not.

But because nearly thirty years later, the maroon car has never solved the case.

The driver has never been publicly identified. The weapon was never recovered. No arrest followed. And the only known witness was the person who described that car.

If the car was real, then someone knows something about it. Someone owned it, drove it, rode in it, saw it, hid it, repaired it, repainted it, or heard someone talk about it.

If the car was not real, or not real in the way the public was told, then the first direction of the investigation may have been built around a version of the night that could never fully answer Bryan’s murder.

Episode 6 also addresses the polygraph issue carefully.

A public article reported that Trevor was given a polygraph by Indiana State Police, and that investigators said nothing new was learned from it. But family recollections and rumors around the case suggested something different, including claims that Trevor failed polygraph tests.

Polygraphs are not truth machines. A failed or unclear polygraph result would not prove guilt. Nervousness, fear, trauma, question wording, or other factors can affect results.

But the polygraph matters because it became another point of confusion between the public story, the family’s understanding, and the investigation.

In a case where trust was already breaking down, unclear communication created more suspicion.

Episode 6 does not accuse Trevor Powell of killing Bryan Haltom.

It examines why his account matters.

Trevor’s version determined where people looked first. It focused the case on a maroon car, a traffic confrontation, and a stranger.

But if that version was incomplete, confused, shaped by fear, or missing key details, then the case may have started too late in the night.

Because Bryan’s day did not begin on Highway 231.

Before Trevor’s account, before the alleged traffic confrontation, and before the shot, Bryan had reportedly been at Keith Flynn’s house near Stinesville earlier that day.

That detail matters because it shifts the question.

Did Bryan’s murder begin with road rage?

Or did the danger begin before the road?

Episode 6 is the bridge between the witness account and the next part of the series.

Trevor’s version begins with a traffic confrontation.

But Bryan’s earlier timeline points somewhere else: to Keith Flynn’s house, where Bryan had reportedly been the day he was killed.

The next episode of A Heavy Weight looks at Flynn’s House: the older man, the teenagers, the rural property, the alleged drugs, the later charges, and the question of what Bryan may have been moving through before his final night ended on Highway 231.
