At first glance, it was just another hot summer night at a Nashville truck stop. Engines idled, fluorescent lights buzzed, and long-haul drivers tucked themselves into the shadows of their cabs. But when police walked across the lot toward a mustard-yellow rig in July 2007, they would uncover more than one crime scene. Inside, they found blood, restraints, and a driver whose words—and truck—would connect him to killings across multiple states.
This is the story of Bruce Mendenhall, the man the press called the “Truck Stop Serial Killer.” But our episode isn’t about him. It’s about the women.
Women like Sara Nicole Hulbert, 25, murdered in Nashville. And women like Andrea Michelle Hendrix-Steinert, 28, found a decade earlier in a ditch off County Road 350 in southern Indiana. Andrea’s case remains unsolved. There is no public forensic link to Mendenhall—but the overlap of method, place, and pattern forces us to ask the questions that never went away.

Through immersive storytelling, and investigative framing, A Heavy Weight explores how predators exploit the interstate system, how media bias amplifies killers while silencing victims, and how women like Andrea become lost in jurisdictional cracks and resource gaps.
