On June 12, 1994, a motorist driving along Radcliff Road in Washington County, Indiana, saw something strange: a Chrysler idling at the roadside. The headlights were still on. The brake light glowed red.
Inside, 20-year-old Delmar Wilson of Paoli was slumped forward in the driver’s seat, his foot pressed against the pedal. He had been shot once in the head at close range.
Delmar wasn’t a drifter or an outsider. He was a 1992 Paoli High School graduate, a son, a brother, a co-worker at Hillcrest Manufacturing. Friends described him as quiet, hardworking, someone who liked to fish and hunt. He had dropped off his girlfriend around 1 a.m. that night, within a couple miles of where his body would be found. By morning, he was dead.
Thirty years later, no one has been charged. Detectives believe Delmar likely knew his killer. The case has shifted between investigators, but no witness has come forward, no suspect has been named. His parents, Darrell and Mary Ann, still live with the unanswered questions. His classmates still gather to remember him.
This episode of A Heavy Weight takes listeners back to that June night, through the crime scene, the investigation, and the silence that has followed. We ask the questions investigators haven’t resolved: Who was Delmar waiting for? Why a shotgun? Why here, on a dark road between Fredericksburg and Hardinsburg?
The brake light glowed for hours that morning. One unblinking witness. Thirty years later, the truth is still waiting.
