The Disappearance of Joseph Smedley | A Heavy Weight Podcast

In 2015, Joseph Smedley, a 20-year-old Indiana University student, disappeared from Bloomington, Indiana. His sister, Vivianne Smedley, drove down to find him—alone, searching through campus streets, fraternity houses, and wooded back roads for any trace of her brother.

Episode 3 of A Heavy Weight, “Rumors” follows Vivianne’s desperate search during the week Joseph was reported missing. The episode exposes new information about Joseph Smedley’s last known cell-phone pings, the Sigma Pi fraternity, and the discovery of several cryptic notes that deepened the mystery surrounding his disappearance.

Conflicting Data and a City Divided

According to police records, one of Joseph’s final phone pings placed him downtown near 7th and Walnut Street, the center of Bloomington’s nightlife. Another ping appeared several miles north on Old State Road 37, near the quiet woods and reservoir of Griffy Lake, where Joseph’s body would later be discovered.

The distance between those points made it impossible for him to have walked in the time frame recorded. This contradiction left Vivianne convinced that Joseph wasn’t alone that night.

The episode also reveals how confusion between the Indiana University Police Department and the Bloomington Police Department complicated the investigation, as each handled different aspects of the search.

The Notes That Changed Everything

Throughout the investigation, Vivianne uncovered three handwritten notes connected to Joseph’s disappearance.

  1. A farewell message found on his bed claiming he had “left the country.”
  2. A warning note allegedly received weeks earlier telling someone to “stop looking.”
  3. A final message found in place of a missing bottle of scotch he’d been saving for his wedding, simply reading “Will return.”

These messages, and the conflicting stories surrounding them, became central to understanding what might have happened to Joseph Smedley.

Inside the Sigma Pi Fraternity Chat

Episode 3 dives into a recovered group chat between members of the Sigma Pi fraternity, which Joseph had belonged to. In the days after he vanished, fraternity brothers debated what to tell police, questioned his membership status, and speculated about what he “might have been involved in.”

The tone of the chat was defensive, less about finding Joseph and more about protecting reputations. The conversation hints at tension, secrecy, and fear that something larger was at play within the fraternity house on Mitchell Street.

A Sister’s Determination

By the end of the week, Vivianne had exhausted nearly every lead. Rumors spread faster than facts, and official explanations felt hollow. Still, she kept searching, piecing together data, messages, and memories. Her investigation, driven by love and instinct, became the foundation for the questions this series continues to ask: What really happened to Joseph Smedley?
